Non GMO | No Corn,No Soy

Our pigs and chickens are supplemented a no corn or soy, non GMO feed from Tucker Milling Feed Co. We chose a no corn or soy diet for our animals due to the breed, animal health, human health, and environmental health. Corn and soy are used in the conventional agriculture model as a means of fattening animals as cheaply and quickly as possible. We raise slow growth meat, valuing the health and quality of life of our product above all. Red Wattle hogs are naturally a lean meat hog with excellent marbling quality, which eliminates the need for any fat increasing ingredients. Due to the physiological make-up of pigs (non-ruminant animals, like humans) they have a restricted ability to fully process certain grains. When these grains are not fully processed in the digestive tract of the animal, excess chemical elements are released into the environment resulting in negative environmental impacts.

Pasture Living

32 Acres of Pasture and Woods

Red Wattle hogs are a heritage breed known for their adaptability and ability to thrive on pasture. They are an endangered breed of swine which nearly went extinct in the 1800’s due their inability to thrive, and even survive, in the dreaded feed lot systems used by the conventional agriculture model. Instead of a 12’ x 12’ pen, our hogs and chickens are raised on 32 acres of beautiful pasture and woods maintained by the animals and with manual labor instead of herbicides and pesticides. Pigs and chickens are great tools for land maintenance when used correctly, as they keep the soil turned, seeds scattered and germinating, and grass growing, which increases their food source and reduces our carbon footprint, resulting in increased land and environmental health.

Free Farrowing

Following Mother’s Intuition

We love breeding and farrowing on our farm. Conventional agriculture teaches us to place sows in farrowing crates when it is time for them to give birth, so that they do not cause injury or death to their piglets due to stepping on them. This situation was created due to motherly instinct being bread out of commercial hogs, creating carelessness. We could not disagree more. Red Wattle sows have amazing motherly instincts and care for their young. We provide shelters in the pasture for our sows, which are built in such a way that piglets do have free space to escape the sow should she accidentally lay down wrong or move suddenly. They build their own nests with whatever materials they choose from the pasture, along with wheat straw provided by us. This minimizes stress and allows the sows to relax as much as possible as the miracle of birth takes place.

No Confinement

Free to Roam- our pastured and woodland raised meat birds and layer hens are given acres to roam freely and are encouraged to forage and free range. Not only does foraging supplement feed, it also creates tender and nutrient dense meat and eggs. Our birds are often rotated through large garden spots, supplying the dirt with fertilizer and acting as positive soil disruption. For protection, we stand behind electric poultry netting. We have success using the electric netting on grass and in the woods. It serves as a great barrier for ground predators who may want to make a tasty meal out of our flock, and provides boundaries for the chickens.
